I've had several requests for a Linux version of pgEdit along with some very intriguing feature suggestions. The biggest obstacle is getting a user interface on par with the Macintosh and Windows versions. At the moment my development tools only support the Motif window manager on Linux (Lesstif or OpenMotif). The first time I compiled pgEdit on Linux I was pretty disappointed with the interface. "Motif is just so... 80's" is one assessment I recently received on the subject.
Based on suggestions from the LispWorks mailing list, I spent some time tweaking colors and fonts. I'm at least convinced I can create something presentable. But the real issue is whether or not it can be a competitive product on Linux considering the abundance of free tools such as pgAdmin III. Take a look at this screen shot and tell me what you think.
Go ahead
I use pgedit on the Mac quite a bit. I'm migrating toward linux as my main machine and would love to have access to pgEdit there. I agree with the above two comments--looks are secondary. The emacs key bindings, syntax highlighting, and facility for doing all things postgres make pgEdit a valuable tool.
And what about FreeBSD?
pgEdit/Linux and pgEdit/FreeBSD should be quite similar; I may assist in porting.
As for me, I do not care of bells, whistles and cool windows corners as long as the program does what I need.
Go for it
Ok, I agree that the motif interface looks a bit dated. But who cares? If you have a product that works, I'll use it. The looks are the least thing I care about when picking SQL tools.
